The Process
Overview

The history of people of the African Diaspora is important because it serves as the foundation for understanding social, economic, and political life in America and around the world. The Black History Video Challenge provides an interactive and engaging format for middle school students to share their knowledge about the accomplishments of Black people.

This challenge is open to all Shepard students. Everyone has something to gain by deepening their knowledge of Black history. This is because Black history is both heritage knowledge for Black people, as well as cultural knowledge for people of other ethnic backgrounds. Teaching Black history helps to combat damaging views and stereotypes of Black people while developing positive cultural identities. Black history is everyone’s history.

Prizes

$250 in Gift Cards for Grand-Prize Video (Decided by Judges’ Pick for Best Video)

$100 in Gift Cards for People’s Champ (Decided by a Poll – Video with Most Votes Wins)

How To Apply

Interested students or teams will create an original video (90 seconds or less) informing viewers of Black history facts. Videos might focus on, but are not limited to, (a) the biographies of prominent Black figures, (b) historic events or laws that have had a significant impact on Black people, (d) key achievements of lesser-known Black people, (e) arts, sports, and entertainment, (f) advancements in science and technology. Students have the option of describing one Black History fact with more details, or describing a number of Black history facts that are connected by a theme. Students may focus on Black history in the United States, but are not limited to the United States. Black history facts may focus on the worldwide collection and global dispersion of African descendants in the United States and beyond, from any time period (including present-day history in the making). If desired, the video can include music, images, dancing, or special effects. However, these elements are not a requirement. When the video is ready, the individual student or lead team member will visit this Shepard Black History Challenge registration page and click the “sign-up” button.
